Where to sell a motorbike in the UK
Four realistic routes, and the trade-off behind each one. Money, time and risk rarely point the same way, so it helps to know which one you are choosing.
Private sale
Usually the highest headline price, and the most work. You write the advert, field the messages, hold the viewings and decide who gets to sit on your bike.
The real costs are time and risk: no-shows, lowball offers, test ride requests from strangers, and payment fraud. Never release a bike until cleared funds are in your account.
Highest price on paper. Lowest certainty, and the only route where strangers come to your address.
Part exchange at a dealer
Simple and fast if you are buying another bike from that dealer. The weakness is that one dealer sets both numbers, so a generous part exchange can quietly be funded by a firmer price on the bike you are buying.
If you go this route, agree the price of the new bike first, then discuss your old one.
Instant online buying sites
You get a fast online figure from a single buyer. The common complaint is the gap between that figure and the amount offered once the bike is inspected.
One buyer means one opinion of value, and no competition to push it up. Check whether the quote is a guaranteed price or an estimate, and whether collection is charged.
Sealed dealer offers
Several verified motorcycle dealers look at the same honest profile and submit private offers in a scheduled window. No dealer sees another's amount, so each bids what your bike is genuinely worth to their forecourt.
You see the highest valid offer when the window closes and decide whether to take it. No advert, no viewings, no strangers at your door, and only the dealer who buys gets your contact details.
- Free for sellers. The winning dealer pays the marketplace fee.
- Collection is arranged by the buying dealer, nationwide.
- Payment comes directly from the dealer to you.
- You can decline. Nothing is ever accepted on your behalf.
Which one should you choose?
If you have time, patience and a desirable bike, a careful private sale can still be the highest number.
If you want the bike gone this month, with no adverts and no doorstep haggling, competing dealer offers usually land closest to a private price without the exposure.
